Yoga With Kelsey!
Hear from Kelsey!
“Hi friends, I’m Kelsey.
To say a bit about my relationship to yoga: I have been doing yoga for about eight years now, six of those hyper-seriously (on the daily). Pre-yoga life, I spent years abusing my body with excess amounts of physical activity; sometimes I would spend up to three hours in the gym lifting weights (including an hour of sauna) after a full day of working a physical job–as a landscaper/gardener–in the sun (or snow). Not only did I develop an unhealthy relationship to movement, but I also developed an unhealthy relationship to my body and mind, which came with some relentless back pain (among other things). I eventually realized that I no longer wanted to treat my flesh as a punching bag. Quite typical for me, I was doing too much but luckily, I knew yoga could help.
As a reformed extremist, I found yoga to be an ideal fit for my exercise. As a daily movement practice, yoga offers endless opportunities to challenge the capacities of the body (and the mind) with its multitude of asana (yoga poses), advanced or otherwise. Perhaps more importantly though, yoga promotes a respect for the body as it encourages us to listen to the subtle cues that come from our physical organism, the ones we so often ignored in our everyday, fast-paced lives. Because mastering the poses takes time, patience, and perseverance, yoga also cultivates the art of humility–a lesson we can take into other areas of living. What is lovely about yoga is that each pose will be distinctively expressed by everyone; each person’s progress will look different and evolve in the unhurried pace that suits you.
Remember–yoga is not all about ‘pushing’; it is about developing a harmonious equilibrium between the push and the pull (the latter being knowing when too much is too much, and then listening and acting on that cue).
